How to: Remove bungs

Erick has been stripping s/v Windsong, his Downeast 38, down essentially a bare hull.  In the process, he has learned a thing or two about how to remove bungs, having done literally thousands of them.

Before you do your next wood working project, you owe it to yourself to check out the detailed treatise he wrote up covering the process he developed.

  1. This is an effective but slow way to remove bungs. As a professional boat carpenter, many times we need to remove hundreds of bungs at a time (removal and repairing of planks, removal of interior jointerwork etc.) I have found the best and most accurate way is with a tool that's a bit expensive for a one time job but will amaze you at how easy bung removal can be. They can be found online and on any Snap-on Tool truck that roams the country. Each kit has different size cutters and are interchangeable. This tool lets you position the cutter (under spring tension) directly over the bung. When you cut, you create an already perfect sized bung hole that can then be picked clean with any small tool. These are hardened tools, and can also if needed, cut the head of the screw right off. You might want to practice a little, but trust me, you'll love it.
It's actually a sheet metal tool and called a Rotobroach.......http://westsidedelivers.com/item.asp?PID=21136
